The Morehead Inn was built in 1917 for an energetic businessman named
Charles Coddington and his wife Marjorie. Ten years earlier, Coddington
had driven the first Buick south of the Mason Dixon Line. The automobile
business he subsequently opened set him barreling along the road to
fortune.
He
asked distinguished British-born architect William Peeps to design and
create a house that was literally built for entertaining.

The Morehead Inn remained a private residence until 1980. In 1976, The
Inn served as Charlotte's showcase house for the local chapter of the
American Society of Interior Designers, finally becoming a country inn
in 1984. The 14,000 sq. ft. complex was granted its historic status
by the Mecklenburg Properties Commission in 1985, officially registering
the property as a Charlotte Historic Landmark.
